Possums Gentle Slumber Program

Facilitator: Simone Mayze, Registered IBCLC, Midwife and Nurse, NDC Accredited Practitioner. https://mammasmilk.com.au

“People who say they sleep like a baby, usually don’t have one.”

A new baby in the family presents adjustments on many levels. The change in sleep habits for parents is often the hardest to adjust to. In Australia, in particular, there is an ideology that promotes the idea of ‘sleep training’ and the need to teach a baby to ‘self-settle’.

The possum’s approach is evidence-based in its approach to helping families get the sleep they need without compromising the trusting relationship you are building with your baby. Your emotional bond with your baby and their need to feel secure in their attachment to you shouldn’t be compromised through harsh regimes and a focus on a clock instead of your baby. Even though these sleep training programs are popular, evidence shows that they don’t decrease the frequency of night waking.

In this class, we will discuss ways to help your baby’s sleep patterns so that sleep is easy and nights are manageable without excessive waking. Having realistic expectations is important in adjusting to change. We will talk about normal infant behaviours, a baby’s need for a rich sensory environment and the benefit in embracing this idea.
